SNAP Households Survey January Results

The following insights come from a 10-minute multiple choice and open response survey conducted by Propel to a random sample of 4,184 of over 5M Propel users from January 1 - January 14, 2023. All respondents are EBT cardholders.

FOOD INSECURITY

Food insecurity is up across all measures.

  • The percentage of users who reported skipping meals, eating less, visiting a food pantry, and relying on others for meals all rose from December to January.
“My mother saved the day when she went to a food bank for us last week. We literally had nothing and no money no food it was awful. But she came In with meats and bananas and tomatoes and bread and milk and literally saved my babies from going hungry.” — Propel user, Florida
  • Nearly 44% of Propel users reported they were running low or out of most things they needed at home, including food in January.
HOUSING

Shelter stays reached an all-time high and housing insecurity is rising.

  • The percentage of Propel users who reported spending at least one night of the previous month in a shelter rose to over 5% for the first time.

  • In addition, over 13% of Propel users are living in unstable housing, up 4% from December.
FINANCIAL INSECURITY

Propel users have less money on hand and more are looking for work.

“I have had friends lend me money so that I can fix my car. Without a working car I am unable to work. I'm the sole source of income for my family.” — Propel user, Georgia
  • 53% of Propel users thought the money they had on hand would only last 1-2 days. This is up 4% from December.
  • 59% of Propel also reported having only $25 on hand.
  • 23% of Propel users said they are not working and looking for work, up 4% from December.
