Yes, Target takes EBT cards in person at all U.S. stores and on its website, which has pick up and delivery options. If you’re shopping on the Target website with SNAP benefits (also called food stamps) you can even sort for SNAP-eligible groceries.

Tips for shopping at Target with an EBT card:

  • Check state SNAP rules for eligible food items or look for the SNAP EBT eligible label on the Target website
  • Separate EBT and non-EBT items at checkout
  • Use an app like Propel to track your monthly EBT balance and budget for essentials
  • Use Target's grocery deals category when you’re shopping online to maximize your SNAP benefits

If Target is your go-to store and you don't already have an EBT card, read about how to qualify for food stamps—you might be eligible for benefits and not even know it.

Can you use EBT at Target self-checkout?

Yes, you can use your EBT card at Target’s self-checkout (in addition to regular checkout). Here’s how:

  1. First, scan your EBT-eligible items at the self-checkout kiosk
  2. Then, tap the "Finish and Pay" button on the screen
  3. Finally, choose "Pay with EBT," swipe your card, and enter your PIN.

The Target self-checkout kiosk will use your EBT balance for any eligible food items. The screen will show the remaining balance if you have any non-EBT items in your cart, and you’ll have to use a different payment method for those. If you have trouble, ask the self-checkout attendant for help.

Can you use EBT for online Target orders?

Yes, Target takes EBT for online orders. You have three options when you’re paying online with your EBT card at Target:

  • Order Pickup: No minimum order required.
  • Same day delivery: No minimum order required, but if your order total is less than $35, a $7 delivery fee will apply. You can't use EBT cards for delivery fees, so you will need another payment method.
  • Shipping: No minimum order required, but a 5.99 shipping fee will apply. You can't use EBT cards for shipping fees, so you will need another payment method.

When buying food online at Target with EBT, be aware of possible changes or extra fees that could increase the final cost, like any shipping or delivery fees or higher-priced substitutions.

If a product is SNAP-eligible, it will say "SNAP EBT eligible" below the reviews section on the Target website.

How to add your EBT card when shopping online at Target

The rules about what is and isn’t SNAP-eligible are the same no matter where you’re shopping, including Target. You can’t use your SNAP benefits on:

  • Any food that's hot when you buy it, including hot coffee, soup, or hot pizza
  • Vitamins, medicines, and any item that has a “Supplement Facts” label
  • Alcohol and tobacco products
  • Non-food items like clothing, electronics, or toys

These rules apply to all retailers with two exceptions. The first exception is the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP), which lets some SNAP recipients buy prepared foods at approved restaurants.

The other exception is Disaster-SNAP (D-SNAP), which provides temporary benefits during natural disasters, and can allow you to buy hot foods with your EBT card, among other things.

Does Target take WIC?

Yes, Target accepts WIC, but only in-store and only at some locations. Before shopping, you should call your local Target location to check if WIC is accepted.

Protecting your EBT card while shopping at Target

No matter where you use your EBT card, it is important to protect your benefits from theft or scams. Here’s how to keep your EBT card safe while shopping at Target:

  • Check for illegal skimming devices on the card reader (thieves may use them to steal your EBT card information). A good way to check is to gently tug the card reader before swiping your EBT card
  • Never share your PIN with anyone, not even Target employees
  • Keep your EBT card in a secure place
  • Change your PIN every month before your deposit lands
  • Check your EBT balance often for unusual activity (you can check your balance on the Propel app)

Report a lost or stolen EBT card immediately by calling your state EBT number.
