California is rolling out chip-enabled EBT cards in early 2025, becoming the first state to offer EBT cards with the same fraud protection that credit and debit card users have had since 2015.

EBT cards with outdated magnetic stripe technology are an easy target for skimming devices at ATMs, grocery stores, and gas pumps. Thieves have exploited this weakness, stealing more than $15 million monthly from California's most vulnerable families.

The new chip technology will help prevent thieves from copying card information and draining EBT accounts. Instead of swiping, you’ll be able to tap your EBT card against the card reader, which means a more secure and safer transaction when you use your benefits.

If you're California resident with an EBT card, expect to receive your new card in the mail between February and June. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Update your mailing address at BenefitsCal.com if you haven't already
  • Once you receive the new card, activate it right away by using it
  • When you're checking out with your new EBT card, try to use the tap or chip feature first. Some stores may not be ready to accept the updated EBT card technology, so you may be prompted to swipe instead, but don't swipe until you've tried to tap first.
  • Discard your old CalFresh card, which will stop working 180 days after the new card is issued.

You don’t have to stop using your old EBT card while the transition to chip cards is happening, your current EBT card will work until your new one arrives.
