- SNAP income limits for seniors and people with disabilities
To qualify for food stamps (officially known as SNAP benefits), you need to make under a certain amount of money each month.
The exact amount depends on your state and the number of people in your household. A household of one typically needs to make $2,510 or less per month before taxes in order to qualify for SNAP. There are also special income calculations for households with seniors, gig workers (like drivers for Uber or DoorDash), college students, people with disabilities, and people with certain immigration statuses.
The maximum qualifying income level for SNAP is set every year in October. The 2024-2025 SNAP income limits apply through September 30, 2025.

What’s the highest income to qualify for SNAP in each state?#whats-the-highest-income-to-qualify-for-snap-in-each-state
SNAP eligibility is based on your most recent income from the last 30 days, even if you made more in other months during the past year.
Just remember to report any changes to your income to your SNAP agency. Your benefit amount may increase or decrease, or you may no longer qualify for SNAP if you’re over the income limit.
When applying for SNAP, calculate your monthly household income by adding:
- Work pay before taxes
- Self-employment earnings
- Child support received
- Unemployment benefits
- Other money received from any sources in the last 30 days
Income from freelancing or self-employment is calculated differently depending on the state. In some places, you subtract 40 or 50 percent from your total earnings, while in others you subtract your business costs to get your self-employment income. Your SNAP application will tell you how to determine your self-employment earnings.
Most states don’t consider your non-retirement savings (sometimes called “assets” or “resources”) when determining your SNAP eligibility unless someone in your household is a senior (age 60 or older) or has a disability. Those households often have different income limits.
To qualify for food stamps, your household income needs to be at or below the set monthly amounts by household size in your state.

If someone in your household is 60 or older or has a disability, you may still qualify even with higher income in these states:
In Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, households with members who are 60 and over or have a disability only need to meet an income requirement if the household has more than $4,500 in assets.
Contact your local SNAP office if your household has members who are seniors or have disabilities to learn more about how your income is calculated for SNAP.
